Overview
Role: Designer, Production Manager, Project Manager, Art Director
Focus: Print Layout, Project Management, Branding
A structural and typographic overhaul of a flagship print publication, with an emphasis on strict structure, data clarity, digital translation, and maximum readability and accessibility.
Adding Interactivity
Cognitive Reading Comfort + Grid Discipline
Notes
Cognitive Reading Comfort: To improve tracking for neurodivergent readers, dense walls of text were broken up using a distinct paragraph indent paired with a subtle, intentional line space. This dual-indicator approach prevents visual fatigue.
Typographic and Grid Discipline: To accommodate larger 12-point type without cluttering spreads, I implemented a strict baseline grid. This locked down exact, mathematical spacing between every headline, pull quote, graphic asset, and text column to establish a predictable reading rhythm.
Accessible Charts
Notes
I moved away from color legends in favor of direct text labeling and physical leader lines. This format connects data points directly to their descriptors, ensuring the charts are fully accessible for colorblind viewers.
Impact
The new design improvements prioritized accessibility without sacrificing design. The grid and spacing templates streamlined the workflow for subsequent issues, make each issue more efficient than the last. Additionally, shortly after release, the organization received a voicemail from a supporter who shared that he had completely stopped reading magazines because standard print is always too small, but because of the new type treatment, he was actually able to read this entire publication from cover to cover.
